The ornament with the gray lettering was mistakenly given a limited edition number by the factory. It was not intended to be a limited edition but rather limited by year.
A certificate of authenticity was issued with this piece but was not included in the boxes. They were given to the dealers by the company, and the store was to give them to the collector when purchasing the item. Needless to say, most collectors didn't get the certificates because both dealers and their employees forgot about the certificates. The collectors didn't know that the piece came with a certificate, so most certificates got thrown out by the stores after they no longer had the item in stock.
The red lettered Snowball is different from the gray version. Besides the year being red in color, it doesn't have a limited edition number or a flat space on the bottom. The red lettered Snowball is a rare sample and less than 72 pieces were produced in this color. Because of its rarity, it has a higher secondary value than the Snowball with gray letters.
